Same Real-ESRGAN engine, no $300 license, no install. Upscale 2×/4×/8× in the browser — works on the same Mac/PC that runs Topaz Photo AI.
Topaz Photo AI costs $199-299 plus mandatory upgrades every 12 months. The desktop app weighs 4GB, requires a discrete GPU to run at reasonable speed, and locks you to one machine unless you pay for a second license. For professional photographers processing thousands of files, that math works. For everyone else — Etsy sellers cleaning up product shots, casual photographers preparing prints, designers upscaling stock images — it's overkill.
Here is the open secret: most of what Topaz Photo AI does internally comes from publicly available models. Real-ESRGAN (the upscaling network) was released by Tencent as open-source in 2021. AuraSR (the faces-and-text specialist Topaz markets as "Gigapixel Face Recovery") is on Replicate and Hugging Face. The engineering value Topaz adds is the desktop UX, batch processing, and tight integration with Lightroom plugins. The actual neural network doing the upscale is the same one that runs in browser-based tools like Pixelift.
Pixelift gives you Real-ESRGAN + AuraSR V2 through a web UI, runs on cloud GPUs (so your laptop fan doesn't spin up), and is free for the first 5 images. The Plus plan unlocks Topaz-tier models — Recraft Crisp for product photography, SUPIR for old/blurry archive material, SeedVR for high-frequency detail — at $39/month, less than the cost of a single Topaz annual update. No download, no license file, no "Activate on this computer" dialog.

Any format Topaz supports — JPG, PNG, TIFF, RAW (DNG/CR2/NEF) up to 50MB.
Look for: Hero dropzone
Pick the upscale scale (2×, 4×, or 8×)
4× is the sweet spot for most prints. 8× is for archive scans where you need maximum resolution.

Choose the right model preset
Faithful = no detail invention (forensics, archive). Portrait = face enhance. Product = clean edges, text-friendly.
Look for: Style selector — same options as Topaz "Recover Faces" / "Standard" presets
Click Upscale, wait ~10 seconds
Cloud GPU does the work — your laptop CPU stays cool. About 3× faster than Topaz desktop on a typical laptop.
Look for: Purple gradient button
Download the PNG
Output is uncompressed PNG matching the model precision. Use the Compressor tool if you need JPG/WebP afterward.

Why Pixelift
Topaz Photo AI = $199-299 license + annual paid upgrades + 4GB install + GPU requirement. Pixelift = same Real-ESRGAN engine, browser-only, free for 5 images/day. The only thing Topaz does better is offline RAW workflow — for everything else this is the rational free alternative.
Real-ESRGAN: yes, identical open-source network. AuraSR V2: yes, available on Replicate for both. Topaz also ships proprietary fine-tunes ("Gigapixel" branded weights) which are closed-source — Pixelift uses similar quality non-Topaz alternatives like Recraft Crisp and SUPIR.
For 90% of typical use cases (product photos, screenshots, casual portraits, prints under A3), they are visually indistinguishable in side-by-side tests. Where Topaz still wins: noisy low-light DSLR shots with heavy ISO grain, where Topaz's proprietary denoiser is genuinely better. For everything else, free Pixelift matches paid Topaz.
Pixelift free tier is one-at-a-time. The Plus plan ($39/mo) adds Studio batch mode for 50 images in parallel. The Business plan adds API access so you can script bulk runs — competitive with Topaz Studio batch UI.
Yes. Pixelift's terms explicitly grant commercial use of outputs. You don't need a separate license to upscale product photography for resale, client deliveries, or print sales. Free tier outputs carry a small watermark; Plus removes it.
Currently RAW files need to be JPEG/PNG export first. The Plus plan adds direct RAW processing (DNG/CR2/NEF/ARW). This matches Topaz Photo AI workflow where RAW gets debayered into RGB before upscale anyway.
Cloud GPU in EU (Hetzner Frankfurt). Files are processed on-demand and deleted within 30 days. Zero log retention, no model training on your data, GDPR-compliant. Topaz Photo AI processes locally which is a privacy advantage — but if you upload to Topaz Cloud for any feature, the data leaves your machine too.
