How to Digitise VHS Tapes and Actually Make Them Watchable

How do you digitise a VHS tape and make it watchable?

Capture the tape with a VCR and a USB capture device at the highest resolution it offers, save the file without re-compressing it, then fix it in this order: stabilise and clean, colorize if it is black and white, upscale, and restore faces last. Doing those steps out of order costs you detail you cannot get back.

The capture is the part you cannot redo later

Everything after capture is software and can be repeated. The capture itself happens once per tape, and tapes degrade. Three things matter:

  • Use a working VCR with a clean head. A dirty head produces dropouts that look like horizontal white streaks. No AI removes those convincingly, because the information is simply absent.
  • Capture to a lightly compressed format. If your capture software offers a "high quality" or lossless option, take it. The file will be large. Disk space is cheaper than a second pass through a tape that is one play closer to failing.
  • Capture the audio in the same pass. Re-syncing separately captured audio later is tedious and rarely perfect.

The order of operations

This is the part people get wrong, and it is the reason two people with the same tape get very different results.

  1. Trim and stabilise first. Cut the blank leader and tail. Any later step that analyses frames works better without noise-only frames at the ends.
  2. Colorize before upscaling, if the footage is black and white. Colorization models work at moderate resolution anyway, and upscaling first just gives the colorizer a bigger, softer image to interpret. Video colorization keeps your original audio.
  3. Upscale after colour. The video upscaler then has colour information to work with, which helps it reconstruct edges.
  4. Restore faces last. Face restoration is a targeted pass. Running it before upscaling means the upscaler enlarges an already-reconstructed face, which tends to look plastic.

How long does a tape take?

Capture runs in real time: a three-hour tape takes three hours. The software passes are much faster, but not instant. On our side a short clip colorizes in under a minute and a five-minute clip in about half an hour, so plan a long tape as several five-minute segments rather than one job.

A realistic expectation

A digitised VHS tape will not look like modern video, and any tool promising that is overselling. What you can reasonably get is a clean, watchable, colour file where faces are recognisable and the sound is intact. For most family footage, that is the whole point.
