Regular 8mm (often called Standard 8 or Double 8) ran from the 1930s and uses smaller sprocket holes with a tiny image area, while Super 8 arrived in 1965 with a much larger frame inside the same film width. Most 8mm home reels were shot silent at roughly 16 to 18 frames per second, so there is no audio track to recover, and the slightly faster playback you sometimes see comes from modern projectors locked to 24 fps.
Identifying the format before digitizing matters because the gate, frame spacing, and aspect ratio differ. Mislabeling a Regular 8 reel as Super 8 leads to cropped frames and visible sprocket bleed. Hold the film to the light: Super 8 has small square perforations near the frame edge, Regular 8 has larger rectangular holes spaced wider apart.
Always digitize by frame-by-frame scanning rather than pointing a camcorder at a projected screen. Projector-and-camera setups introduce flicker, keystone distortion, hot spots, and a halved effective resolution, and they bake the screen texture permanently into the file. A dedicated frame scanner captures each frame square and steady, giving colorization clean data to work from instead of a smeared, double-converted image.
AI colorization adds plausible, temporally consistent color to the luminance already in the grain, and it handles skin tones, foliage, and skies well. What it cannot do is invent detail the film never recorded, so heavy emulsion grain, blown highlights, and out-of-focus stock stay limited.
