VHS is an analog standard with surprisingly low effective detail: roughly 240 to 480 visible lines depending on the system, and far less horizontal chroma resolution than that. PAL tapes (used across Europe) run 576 lines at 25 fps, while NTSC (North America, Japan) runs 480 lines at roughly 30 fps, so knowing the region tells you the correct frame rate and line count for a faithful capture.
Common VHS defects include tracking lines along the top or bottom, dropout sparkles, head-switching noise, and color bleed where saturated reds smear sideways.
