Kodak launched Super 8 in 1965 in a drop-in plastic cartridge, and its real advantage is the image area: by shrinking the perforations, Super 8 fits a frame around 50 percent larger than Regular 8 in the same 8mm-wide stock. That bigger negative means more resolved detail, finer grain relative to subject, and richer tonal gradation, which is exactly the information colorization needs to assign believable hues.
Some later Super 8 cartridges carried a magnetic sound stripe along the edge, so a minority of reels actually do have synced audio. If yours does, capture that track separately during digitizing rather than discarding it, because the original room tone and voices are irreplaceable and add far more emotional weight than any restored image alone.
Super 8's signature is a soft, slightly diffused look with warm, organic grain that reads as nostalgia rather than as a defect. The temptation with modern processing is to crank sharpening and noise reduction until the footage looks clinical, but that strips out the very character people associate with the format and leaves an uncanny, plasticky result.
