You can now use ChatGPT with Apple’s CarPlay

The iOS 26.4 system update officially opens the door for the integration of advanced AI chatbots with vehicle dashboards, enabling the use of ChatGPT directly through the Apple CarPlay interface. This is a breakthrough step in the evolution of in-car entertainment systems, changing how drivers can obtain information on the road. In accordance with Apple safety guidelines, the application eschews displaying text or images on the screen, focusing entirely on Voice-based conversational apps. Users can now conduct fluid, voice-based conversations with the OpenAI model, though the interface remains minimalist, offering only buttons for muting, ending the call, and a list of recent conversations. A significant limitation remains the lack of support for a so-called wake word – to activate the assistant, it is necessary to manually touch the application icon on the car's screen. For the global user community, this means access to much smarter support than traditional voice commands, allowing for the generation of ideas, summarizing information, or planning stops without taking eyes off the road. This integration sets a new standard for vehicle interaction, where artificial intelligence ceases to be just a curiosity on a smartphone and becomes a full-fledged co-pilot.
The integration of artificial intelligence into our daily professional and private lives has just crossed another threshold — the threshold of the car dashboard. Thanks to the latest update of Apple's operating system, iOS 26.4, the world's most popular chatbot, ChatGPT, has officially become available within the CarPlay platform. This is a breakthrough moment for drivers who, until now, were limited to the capabilities of first-generation voice assistants and now gain access to an advanced language model straight from the cockpit.
This implementation is not merely a minor technical fix, but the result of a strategic shift in Apple's approach to automotive software. The Cupertino giant decided to open the door to a new category of services by introducing support for so-called "voice-based conversational apps" in iOS 26.4. This move effectively ends Siri's monopoly on advanced voice interaction in the car, allowing OpenAI products a full-fledged presence in the ecosystem used daily by millions of users worldwide.
Voice as the sole interface in the cabin
Apple's road safety rules have remained restrictive for years, and the new integration with ChatGPT is no exception. According to developer guidelines, an application running in CarPlay mode does not display any text responses or images on the car's main screen. The entire interaction is based exclusively on speech. This aims to minimize driver distraction; instead of reading long blocks of text generated by AI, the driver hears them synthesized through the vehicle's audio system.

Despite the rigorous "no text" approach, the visual interface is not completely empty. On the CarPlay screen, users will find basic functional buttons, such as microphone mute and end call. According to 9to5Mac, the application also allows browsing a list of recent conversations, making it easier to continue threads started earlier on a smartphone or computer. This is a significant convenience for people who use ChatGPT for task planning or generating ideas during their commute.
Lack of wake word and technical requirements
Although the presence of ChatGPT in the car sounds like a vision from science-fiction films, the current implementation has certain functional limitations. The most significant is the lack of support for a "wake word" — a keyword that would activate the bot without touching the screen. Unlike Siri, which does not need to be triggered manually, ChatGPT requires the driver to physically click the app icon on the CarPlay dashboard to start a session. This likely results from system limitations imposed by Apple, which still reserves deep system integration for its own assistant.
To use the new feature, users must meet two key technical conditions:
- Own an iPhone with iOS 26.4 or newer installed.
- Update the ChatGPT app to the latest version available in the App Store.

It is worth noting that this update is not just a nod toward OpenAI. Opening the conversational app category in CarPlay suggests that other models, such as Claude from Anthropic or Gemini from Google, may soon arrive on dashboards. Apple seems to understand that users expect access to their favorite AI tools regardless of the device they are currently using, and the car is a natural environment for "hands-free" technology.
A new era of road assistants
The introduction of ChatGPT to CarPlay changes the dynamic of how we perceive infotainment systems. Traditional car systems are great at simple commands like "call mom" or "set temperature to 20 degrees." However, ChatGPT offers something much more — the ability to conduct complex dialogues, summarize long articles (which we can "feed" it before driving), or even help in learning a foreign language while stuck in traffic. This is a transition from passive command execution to active collaboration.
From an industry perspective, Apple's decision to allow ChatGPT into CarPlay is a signal that the company does not intend to fight the popularity of external chatbots, but rather wants to make its ecosystem the most attractive place to run them. For OpenAI, this is another step toward ubiquity. The possibility of voice interaction without having to glance at a phone screen makes ChatGPT a real competitor to radio or podcasts, offering personalized content generated in real-time at the driver's request.
The appearance of ChatGPT in cars is just the beginning of the transformation of cockpits into intelligent command centers. Although current iOS 26.4 requirements force certain compromises, such as the lack of automatic voice wake-up, the direction of change is clear. In the near future, we can expect even deeper integration, where AI will not only answer questions but actively support the driving process and travel time management, becoming a digital passenger with unlimited knowledge.
